My top ten twitter personalities are political leaders: Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump, television stars: James Franco, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Watson, and Corinne Olympios, musical artists: The Weeknd, Drake, and Bryson Tiller, and comedian: Claudia Oshry. The political leaders, Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders are very active on twitter and send out multiple tweets per day. Trump and Sanders' tweets are always relevant to current events and politics. You won't see either of them tweeting about casual topics like how their mood or what they had for lunch that day. Instead the political leaders tweet to gain support on their campaign. For example, Sanders may tweet something like: "I’ve been criticized for this point, so allow me to repeat it: Yes, health care is a right of all people. #DebateWithBernie" in order to demonstrate his political standpoints and gain support from people who agree with him. Similarly, Trump tweets to promote himself and his recent actions. He also tweets to defend himself in the media: "The failing @nytimes writes total fiction concerning me. They have gotten it wrong for two years, and now are making up stories & sources!" Trump uses exclamation points in nearly every one of his tweets to demonstrate his power and strong opinions. Twitter is an appropriate media for political leaders as information can be sent out quickly and efficiently. The musical artists that I follow do not post as often as the political leaders. Bryson Tiller, Drake, and The Weeknd post tweets about emotions that most people can relate to. They also promote themselves by tweeting links to songs, release dates, or updates on upcoming albums. I've found that the musical artists combine tweeting about their personal lives with promoting their brands so their fans feel like they know and understand them better and are also up to date on their new music and merchandise. The movie stars I follow like James Franco, Emma Watson, and Ryan Reynolds tend to tweet about other celebrities, politics, or self-promotion. Celebrities can have an effect on politics by voicing their opinions and persuading their fans to support their beliefs. Twitter is a very convenient way for celebrities to communicate with the public and express their reactions to current events, sway public opinions, and promote their brands.
