My favorite song is "Closer" by The Chainsmokers. The purpose of the song is to tell the story of a couple that unexpectedly reunites four years after the relationship ended. The audience for this song is meant to be college or post grad students in particular, however high schoolers and adults could also relate to to the songs' lyrics and meaning. The Chainsmokers use the rhetorical appeal pathos to evoke emotion in the listeners. The emotions that the song intends to exude are love, desire, and nostalgia. Desire is demonstrated through the lyrics, "So, baby, pull me closerIn the back seat of your Rover". The lingering love that the couple may feel for each other is presented in the lyrics, "You look as good as the day I met youI forget just why I left you, I was insane". The nostalgia that the couple feels for their past relationship is seen in the lyrics, "Stay and play that Blink-182 song that we beat to death in Tucson". The song is made more appealing as it includes a female and male voice singing back and forth to one another. The style of the song is an upbeat electronic dance track. Using this specific style persuades the audience that things may not always turn out how we hope they would but that we should have fun, seize the day, and live life in the moment. The song maintains its genre conventions by including catchy, rhyming lyrics, bass drops, and electronic music solos. Although "Closer" is very much overplayed nowadays, It will always be one of my favorite songs because of its uniqueness and the rhetoric that it employs.
